Writing and Drama Workshop – Stories We Wish We Had Read
January 20, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Free
Nickel City Literacy League presents ‘Stories We Wish We Had Read’ with Marty Wilson-Trudeau, author of Phoenix Gets Greater a writing and drama workshop for young people (recommended ages 8-15).
Marty Wilson-Trudeau is an Anishinaabe writer and teacher who has co-written an award-winning story about tolerance and acceptance with her actor and dancer son, Phoenix Wilson, and illustrated by Megan Kyak-Monteith. The dual language book recently won the PMC Indigenous Literature Award.
The heartwarming and encouraging story is about a young Indigenous boy who is bullied for being different. When he decides to embrace his true self and comes out to his family, they teach him about Two Spirit/Niizh Manidoowag people and their role in Anishinaabe culture. With this knowledge and his family’s support, he learns to celebrate himself and his identity.
This book shows readers, young and old, the importance of self-love and family acceptance, particularly for Two Spirit Youth.
This workshop will explore ideas of ‘What message would you like to share with younger readers?’
and
‘What would you like to tell your younger self?’
Fun, drama and writing activities suitable for young writers of all reading/writing levels, recommended ages 8-15 years.
Snacks included.
Registration is highly encouraged.
